Before ClausePrep
Shock, shame, and a deadline. The packet is thick. Signing today feels like the only way to stop the spinning.
After ClausePrep
You use the consideration period. You know which lines move cash, healthcare, and references — and which are theater.
For US waiver-review background, see the EEOC’s severance agreement guidance. Review periods and release requirements depend on the circumstances; the email tool does not determine them.
Email structure that works
- Identify the proposed separation package without accepting it.
- Restate the current offer in one sentence so numbers are shared reality.
- Make specific requests with brief, factual reasons.
- Offer a call if useful, but put the asks in writing first.
- Request revised terms and any deadline extension in writing.
Sample body you can adapt
Subject: Separation terms follow-up
Thank you for the separation package and for the time on [team/project]. I want to make this transition smooth for everyone.
Before making a decision, I would like to discuss [specific severance pay request], [benefits support request], and [any other term you want changed]. My reasons are [brief factual context]. These are examples of requests to customize, not recommended amounts or entitlements.
Please let me know which changes you can consider and share any revised terms in writing. I am available for a call if helpful. Thank you for considering my request.
Requesting more time to review
Ask for the time you need and request written confirmation of the revised response deadline. A request alone does not extend your deadline.
Sample: Thank you for providing the agreement. I would like additional time to review it, through [requested date]. Please confirm whether this extension is available and the revised response deadline.
Following up on a counteroffer
Keep the original request in the same thread. Summarize the points still open and ask when you can expect a response.
Sample: I am following up on my earlier request to discuss the severance terms. Could you share an update on [open points] and let me know when I can expect a response?
Before sending
Replace every bracket, check names and numbers, and keep the message focused on the requested changes. Avoid promises to sign before you have reviewed the final agreement.
The builder does not decide your legal rights, assess your release, or calculate a fair severance amount. Bring the agreement and your draft to qualified counsel when you need that review.

Questions
Can I use this as a severance negotiation letter?
Yes. Choose Letter in the builder to use a Re line instead of an email subject. Add any address block or date required for your own letter, then review the draft before sending.
Is the builder free, and does it send my email?
The writing tool is free and needs no account. It does not send emails or save your entries. Copy or download your draft before leaving or refreshing the page.
Should I CC personal counsel?
Only if counsel is formally involved. Otherwise keep the thread clean between you and HR.
Is email better than a call?
Email creates a record. A call can help after the written ask is in.
